🩺 Vitals
- 🟢 Last active: 2026-09-28
- 📦 Latest release: No stable release on the forge
- 🐞 Open issues: 96
- 🌟 Stars: 859
What do these metrics mean?
- Last active: when code was last pushed, as of our last check. The dot is green when that was recent, grey otherwise. A long gap can mean a tool is finished and stable, not only unmaintained.
- Latest release: the most recent stable version the maintainers published as a release on the forge. Some healthy projects publish only tags, or publish their versions elsewhere.
- Open issues: unresolved reports and requests. A high number is normal for a popular project and is not a warning on its own.
- Stars: how many people bookmarked the project on its forge. A rough popularity signal, not a measure of quality.
🏗️ Profile
- Official: taiga.io
- Source: github.com/taigaio/taiga-back
- License: MPL-2.0
- Deployment: Docker Container | Language Runtime (Pip/NPM)
- Jurisdiction: Spain 🇪🇸 / EU 🇪🇺 (TAIGA CLOUD SERVICES, S.L.)
- Compliance (SaaS): tree.taiga.io security and compliance page
- Compliance (Self-Hosted): Self-Hosted (User Managed)
- Complexity: High (4/5) - Nine services on one node: the API, a worker, two RabbitMQ brokers, the web client, events and attachments services, an NGINX gateway and PostgreSQL
- Maintenance: Moderate (3/5) - Image pulls and a relaunch per release, migrations at each start; a database and media files to back up, two message brokers to keep healthy
- User Management: Low (2/5) - Per-project roles with granular permissions and a change history with author and time in the free build; no TLS of its own, no SAML or OIDC sign-in
What the scores mean: Reading the Scores
1. The Executive Summary
What is it? Taiga is an agile project management tool for cross-functional teams working in Scrum or Kanban. It covers backlog and sprint planning with epics and sub-tasks, Kanban boards, issue and bug tracking, a wiki and a REST API, and imports projects from GitHub and Trello.
The Strategic Verdict:
- 🔴 For teams that need single sign-on or encrypted transport out of the box: Caution. The free build has no SAML or OIDC sign-in and serves plain HTTP until the operator adds TLS at its own proxy (User Management).
- 🟢 For agile teams that want their project data on their own servers: Strong Buy. Scrum and Kanban, per-project roles and a change history come in the free build, with no paid edition and no license fee (What is it?, User Management, Cost of Ownership).
2. Cost of Ownership
| Cost Component | Taiga (Self-Hosted) |
|---|---|
| Pricing Model | No license fee |
| Operations | Single VM, several services (PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ); plus your team's time to run it (Maintenance, in the Profile) |
| Support | From the vendor: tree.taiga.io, a managed service, and paid support for self-hosted installs (enterprise support); elsewhere, a paid service provider |
| Exit | Project dump (JSON); people are kept only as email addresses, so assignments survive only where those accounts already exist |
What each row covers: Total Cost of Ownership
3. Risk Assessment
- Jurisdiction: TAIGA CLOUD SERVICES, S.L., the project's vendor, is registered in Spain, under EU law and the GDPR. The vendor is controlled by AITIRE, S.L., based in Spain. The vendor runs tree.taiga.io, a hosted service where your data can live, hosted only by parties domiciled in the EU. A self-hosted install sends usage data to the vendor unless the operator switches it off.
- The Compliance Shift: Project exports, attachments included, are served from a path the shipped gateway leaves unauthenticated, protected only by a random link. Self-hosting moves the security and compliance duties of running the software to the operator (the operator's compliance checklist). Any audit of tree.taiga.io (such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001) covers the vendor's own systems, never your install.
- License Risk: Taiga is under MPL-2.0, an OSI-approved weak copyleft license (what it allows and requires). The project moved to these terms from AGPL-3.0-or-later in 2021. Contributors keep the rights to their code and no agreement transfers them, so moving future versions to terms without copyleft would need every holder's consent. The web interface is under AGPL-3.0-or-later, and Kaleidos INC, the copyright holder the code names, handed Taiga to the vendor in 2024 on condition it stays copyleft.
4. Market Landscape
🏢 Proprietary Incumbents
- Jira: Jira is a hosted tool for teams to plan, track and deliver work.
Data held by: Atlassian Pty Ltd, Australia 🇦🇺 (controlled by Atlassian Corporation, United States); the data it holds is within reach of the US CLOUD Act, wherever it is stored, if its US parent controls it.
Why teams leave: By default its lowest paid plan uses work items' text and comments to improve Atlassian's AI.
Exit: Site backup (XML and attachments in a ZIP), or work items through the REST API (JSON), partial export (third-party app data)
With Taiga: Work items stay on the servers the operator runs (Deployment, in the Profile).
🤝 Open-Source Alternatives
- Plane: AGPL-3.0 project management platform: sprint/epic model, self-hosted with full data sovereignty. SSO and air-gapped require the paid enterprise tier.
- OpenProject: GPL-3.0 enterprise project management. EU-incorporated, no CLOUD Act exposure, native Gantt and agile tooling, without Jira's per-seat lock-in.
